The Secret Code at the End of Every Action

Imagine you hear a single word in a crowded room: eating. You do not know who is eating. Is it one person? Is it a group? Is it you, or someone across the room?

Sanskrit solves this problem with an ingenious code attached to the end of every verb. In Sanskrit, a single verb carries the whole story. The ending tells you exactly who is doing the action and how many people are doing it, even if you leave out words like he, you, or I.

When an action happens right now in the present moment, Sanskrit uses a tense called Lat Lakar (लट् लकार / Present Tense). Let us unlock how this simple code works.

What is Lat Lakar (लट् लकार)?

Lat Lakar (लट् लकार) represents the present tense (वर्तमान काल). You use it whenever you talk about actions happening right now, such as reading, writing, or walking.

To build a Sanskrit verb, you start with an action root called a Dhatu (धातु). For example, the root for reading is पठ् (paṭh). Then, you attach a specific ending based on two things:

  • Person (Purusha / पुरुष): Is it a third person (he/she/they), second person (you), or first person (I/we)?
  • Number (Vachana / वचन): Is it one person (Ekavachanam), two people (Dvivachanam), or many people (Bahuvachanam)?

Unlike English or Hindi which only have singular and plural, Sanskrit has a dedicated dual number (Dvivachanam) specifically for two people or items.

The 9 Golden Endings of Lat Lakar

Here is the grid of the 9 standard endings for present tense verbs. Think of this grid as a mathematical formula. You fit these endings directly onto the verb stem.

Purusha (पुरुष) Ekavachanam (एकवचनम् - 1) Dvivachanam (द्विवचनम् - 2) Bahuvachanam (बहुवचनम् - 3+)
Prathama Purusha (प्रथम पुरुष)
(Third Person: He / She / It / They)
-ति (-ti) -तः (-taḥ) -न्ति (-nti)
Madhyama Purusha (मध्यम पुरुष)
(Second Person: You / You two / You all)
-सि (-si) -थः (-thaḥ) -थ (-tha)
Uttama Purusha (उत्तम पुरुष)
(First Person: I / We two / We all)
-मि (-āmi) -वः (-āvaḥ) -मः (-āmaḥ)

Building Your First Verbs Step by Step

Let us apply these endings to the root पठ् (paṭh - to read / पढ़ना). Watch how the ending attaches seamlessly to the root.

1. Third Person (Prathama Purusha / प्रथम पुरुष)

Use this when talking about someone else (he, she, or a named person).

  • पठति (paṭhati): पठ् (paṭh) + -ति (-ti) = पठति (paṭhati)
    Meaning: He/She reads (वह पढ़ता/पढ़ती है).
  • पठतः (paṭhataḥ): पठ् (paṭh) + -तः (-taḥ) = पठतः (paṭhataḥ)
    Meaning: They two read (वे दोनों पढ़ते हैं).
  • पठन्ति (paṭhanti): पठ् (paṭh) + -न्ति (-nti) = पठन्ति (paṭhanti)
Meaning: They all read (वे सब पढ़ते हैं).

2. Second Person (Madhyama Purusha / मध्यम पुरुष)

Use this when speaking directly to your reader or listener (you).

  • पठसि (paṭhasi): पठ् (paṭh) + -सि (-si) = पठसि (paṭhasi)
    Meaning: You read (तुम पढ़ते हो).
  • पठथः (paṭhathaḥ): पठ् (paṭh) + -थः (-thaḥ) = पठथः (paṭhathaḥ)
    Meaning: You two read (तुम दोनों पढ़ते हो).
  • पठथ (paṭhatha): पठ् (paṭh) + -थ (-tha) = पठथ (paṭhatha)
Meaning: You all read (तुम सब पढ़ते हो).

3. First Person (Uttama Purusha / उत्तम पुरुष)

Use this when speaking about yourself or a group that includes you (I, we two, we all).

  • पठामि (paṭhāmi): पठ् (paṭh) + -आमि (-āmi) = पठामि (paṭhāmi)
    Meaning: I read (मैं लिखता/पढ़ता हूँ).
  • पठावः (paṭhāvaḥ): पठ् (paṭh) + -आवः (-āvaḥ) = पठावः (paṭhāvaḥ)
Meaning: We two read (हम दोनों पढ़ते हैं).
  • पठामः (paṭhāmaḥ): पठ् (paṭh) + -आमः (-āmaḥ) = पठामः (paṭhāmaḥ)
Meaning: We all read (हम सब पढ़ते हैं).

Shape-Shifting Roots: When Verbs Change Their Outfit

Imagine a performer who steps behind a curtain and comes out wearing a new costume before stepping onto the stage. Some Sanskrit root words do the exact same thing in Lat Lakar. They change their basic shape before taking on the 9 golden endings.

These starting root words are called basic roots. Once they change shape, we call them verb stems. Here are the most common shape-shifters you will encounter in school exams:

  • गम् (gam - to go / जाना): Changes to गच्छ् (gacch).
    Example: गच्छति (gacchati) = He goes (वह जाता है).
  • पा (pā - to drink / पीना): Changes to पिब् (pib).
    Example: पिबति (pibati) = She drinks (वह पीती है).
  • दृश् (dṛś - to see / देखना): Changes to पश्य् (paśy).
    Example: पश्यति (paśyati) = He sees (वह देखता है).
  • स्था (sthā - to stand / ठहरना): Changes to तिष्ठ् (tiṣṭh).
    Example: तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) = He stands (वह ठहरता है).

Mathematical formula for building shape-shifted verbs:

Root (गम्) → Stem (गच्छ्) + Ending (-ति) = गच्छति (gacchati)

The Unique Case of Root अस् (as - to be)

The root word for state of being is अस् (as - to be / होना). It does not follow the standard ending pattern perfectly. Memorize this specific grid because it appears in almost every Sanskrit passage.

Purusha (पुरुष) Ekavachanam (1) Dvivachanam (2) Bahuvachanam (3+)
Prathama Purusha अस्ति (asti - is) स्तः (staḥ - two are) सन्ति (santi - many are)
Madhyama Purusha असि (asi - you are) स्थः (sthaḥ - you two are) स्थ (stha - you all are)
Uttama Purusha अस्मि (asmi - I am) स्वः (svaḥ - we two are) स्मः (smaḥ - we all are)

The Secret Trick: Dropping Subject Pronouns

In English, if you say reads, your listener will ask: Who reads? You must add He or She. In Sanskrit, the verb ending carries all the information you need.

If you write लिखामि (likhāmi), the ending -आमि (-āmi) uniquely belongs to first person singular (I). Even if you leave out the pronoun word अहम् (Aham - I), the single word लिखामि (likhāmi) already means I write (मैं लिखता/लिखती हूँ).

Mistakes That Cost Marks in Exams

Avoid these four common traps that students fall into during test papers:

1. Mixing Person (Purusha Mismatch)

  • Wrong: अहम् पठति (Aham paṭhati)
  • Right: अहम् पठामि (Aham paṭhāmi)
  • Why: अहम् (I) is Uttama Purusha. You must use the ending -मि (-mi), not the third person ending -ति (-ti).

2. Mixing Number (Vachana Mismatch)

  • Wrong: सा गच्छन्ति (Sā gacchanti)
  • Right: सा गच्छति (Sā gacchati)
  • Why: सा (She) is one person (Ekavachanam). The ending -न्ति (-nti) is for plural (Bahuvachanam).

3. The Visarga Trap in Madhyama Purusha

  • Wrong: यूयम् गच्छथः (Yūyam gacchathaḥ)
  • Right: यूयम् गच्छथ (Yūyam gacchatha)
  • Why: The two dots called Visarga (: / ः) belong only to dual number -थः (-thaḥ). For plural you all (यूयम्), use -थ (-tha) without visarga.

4. Forgetting Root Substitutions

  • Wrong: सह गमति (Saha gamati)
  • Right: सह गच्छति (Saha gacchati)
  • Why: Root गम् (gam) must change to stem गच्छ् (gacch) in Lat Lakar.

How You Will Be Tested

Exams evaluate your command of Lat Lakar through three main question formats:

  • Fill in the Blanks: Matching a subject pronoun to its verb form. Example: त्वम् कुत्र ________? (गच्छसि / गच्छति). Correct answer: गच्छसि (gacchasi).
  • Sentence Correction: Spotting misplaced visargas or broken subject-verb pairs in full sentences.
  • Translation: Converting simple Hindi or English sentences into Sanskrit present tense. Example: We write becomes वयम् लिखामः (Vayam likhāmaḥ).

Now that you know the 9 golden endings and how shape-shifting roots work, you are ready to tackle tricky sentences with confidence. Test your knowledge in the practice quiz next!

💬 बातचीत: लट् लकार को आसान शब्दों में समझें

You

गुरुजी, संस्कृत में लट् लकार (Lat Lakar) का क्या मतलब होता है? इसे कब इस्तेमाल करते हैं?

Guru

जब कोई काम अभी वर्तमान समय में हो रहा हो, जैसे तुम पढ़ रहे हो, तब हम लट् लकार का प्रयोग करते हैं।

You

क्या क्रिया का रूप इस बात पर भी बदलता है कि काम कौन कर रहा है?

Guru

हाँ, संस्कृत में तीन पुरुष (Prathama, Madhyama, Uttama) और तीन वचन (Ekavachanam, Dvivachanam, Bahuvachanam) होते हैं। कर्ता के बदलते ही क्रिया का अंत बदल जाता है।

You

प्रथम, मध्यम और उत्तम पुरुष को आसानी से कैसे याद रखें?

Guru

उत्तम पुरुष का अर्थ है 'मैं' (I/We)। मध्यम पुरुष का अर्थ है 'तुम' (You)। प्रथम पुरुष का अर्थ है 'वह' या कोई तीसरा व्यक्ति (He/She/They)।

You

अगर मुझे कहना हो 'मैं पढ़ता हूँ', तो क्या मुझे 'अहम्' लिखना ही पड़ेगा?

Guru

नहीं, केवल 'पठामि' कहने से भी पूरा अर्थ समझ आ जाता है, क्योंकि -मि प्रत्यय केवल उत्तम पुरुष एकवचन में ही आता है।

You

अरे वाह! और अगर मैं कहूँ 'त्वम् पठति', तो क्या यह गलत होगा?

Guru

हाँ, यह गलत है। 'त्वम्' मध्यम पुरुष है, इसलिए इसके साथ -सि लगेगा और सही रूप 'त्वम् पठसि' होगा।
