The journey to becoming a civil servant through the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 is a rigorous multi-stage process designed to select the most capable individuals. It begins with a preliminary screening, followed by a comprehensive written examination, and concludes with a personality assessment.

Selection Stages

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

This is the first screening stage, consisting of two objective-type (MCQ) papers: General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT). General Studies Paper I determines qualification for the Mains, while CSAT is a qualifying paper (minimum 33% marks). Marks obtained in Prelims are not counted towards the final merit list. Candidates who clear the cut-off for General Studies Paper I and score above 33% in CSAT qualify for the Main Examination. The exam is typically held in May.

Stage 2: Main Examination (Mains)

The Main Examination consists of nine descriptive papers, including two qualifying language papers and seven papers whose marks are counted for the final merit. These papers cover a wide range of subjects, testing a candidate's in-depth knowledge, analytical ability, and writing skills. Candidates who score above the prescribed cut-off in the Mains Examination are called for the Personality Test (Interview). The Mains examination is scheduled from August 21, 2026, to August 30, 2026.

Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)

This is the final stage, where candidates face a board of competent and unbiased observers. The interview assesses a candidate's mental calibre, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, and intellectual and moral integrity. There are no minimum qualifying marks for the interview, but performance significantly impacts the final ranking. Candidates who perform well in the interview are considered for the final merit list.

How The Final Merit Is Made

The final merit list for the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 is prepared based on the total marks obtained in the Main Examination (written part) and the Personality Test (Interview). The marks secured in the Preliminary Examination are only for screening purposes and are not counted towards the final merit. The Main Examination consists of 7 papers (excluding the two qualifying language papers) each carrying 250 marks, totaling 1750 marks. The Personality Test carries 275 marks. Therefore, the final merit is calculated out of a grand total of 2025 marks (1750 + 275). Candidates are ranked based on their aggregate scores, and selections are made according to the number of vacancies and reservation policies.
