Embarking on the journey to become a civil servant through the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2026 requires a clear understanding of its comprehensive selection process. From the initial application to the final merit list, each stage is designed to identify the most suitable candidates for public service.
Selection Stages
Apply Online
Candidates must complete a 4-stage online application process: Account Creation, Unique Registration Number (URN), Common Application Form (CAF), and Examination Module. Live photo capture and triple-sample signature upload are required during the application, along with face authentication at examination centers. The application window for UPSC CSE 2026 is from February 4, 2026, to February 27, 2026.
Preliminary Examination
This is an objective-type screening test with two papers: General Studies Paper I (merit-based, 200 marks, 100 questions) and General Studies Paper II (CSAT, qualifying with 33% minimum, 200 marks, 80 questions). Both papers are 120 minutes each, with 1/3rd negative marking. Marks from this stage are not counted in the final merit list. The Prelims are scheduled for May 24, 2026.
Main Examination
A descriptive written examination consisting of nine papers. Two papers (Indian Language and English, 300 marks each) are qualifying (25% minimum), and seven papers (Essay, General Studies I-IV, Optional Subject I & II, 250 marks each) are merit-based. This stage carries a total of 1750 marks and is crucial for the final result. There is no negative marking in Mains. The Mains examination is scheduled to commence on August 21, 2026.
Personality Test (Interview)
Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for the Personality Test. This stage evaluates candidates' personality traits, leadership skills, communication skills, and overall suitability for civil service. This stage carries 275 marks.
Document Verification (DV) and Medical Examination
Original documents are verified for eligibility criteria such as age and educational qualifications. A comprehensive medical examination is conducted to ensure candidates meet the commission's prescribed medical standards for civil service.
Final Merit List
The final merit list is prepared based on the aggregate marks obtained in the Mains Examination (1750 marks) and the Personality Test (275 marks), totaling 2025 marks. This list determines the final selection and allocation of services.
How The Final Merit Is Made
The final merit list for the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2026 is computed based on the aggregate marks obtained in the seven merit-based papers of the Mains Examination (1750 marks) and the Personality Test (275 marks), for a grand total of 2025 marks. The two qualifying papers in Mains (Indian Language and English) are not counted towards the final merit. In case of a tie in aggregate marks, the candidate with higher marks in the compulsory papers (Essay and General Studies Papers I-IV) and Personality Test combined is ranked higher. If marks are still equal, the older candidate is ranked higher. Normalization is not used for the Prelims as it is a single-shift, single-question paper per session exam.
