The path to becoming a civil servant through the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 is a comprehensive journey designed to identify the most capable individuals. It's a multi-stage process that tests your knowledge, analytical skills, and personality.

Selection Stages

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

The Prelims is the first hurdle, consisting of two objective-type (MCQ) papers: General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT). This stage is qualifying in nature, meaning your marks here are not counted for the final merit list, but you must score above the cut-off to proceed. CSAT is a qualifying paper where you need to score a minimum of 33%. Typically held in May/June.

Stage 2: Main Examination (Mains)

Candidates who clear the Prelims are eligible for the Mains, which comprises nine descriptive papers. Two papers are qualifying (Indian Language and English), and seven papers are counted for merit (Essay, General Studies I, II, III, IV, and two optional papers). This stage is crucial as the marks obtained here significantly contribute to the final merit. Typically held in September/October.

Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)

Those who qualify in the Mains examination are called for the Personality Test, commonly known as the Interview. This stage assesses your mental caliber, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, and intellectual and moral integrity. Typically held in March/April of the following year.

How The Final Merit Is Made

The final merit list for the UPSC CSE 2026 is prepared based on the total marks obtained in the Main Examination (out of 1750 marks) and the Personality Test (out of 275 marks). The marks from the Preliminary Examination are not included in the final merit calculation. Candidates are allocated to various services based on their rank in the final merit list, their preferences, and their eligibility criteria.
